Math: Combinations

Today we started working on combinations in math. The students will begin solving story problems like this one:

I have 9 fish. Some are blue and some are red. How many blue could I have? How many red could I have?

Students will learn to come up with different combinations such as:

1 blue, 8 red
2 blue, 7 red
3 blue, 6 red
4 blue, 5 red

As always, students are encouraged to share their thinking about how they solved the problem. These types of problems would be a great thing for you to work on at home with your child.

It is true! We did have a deer come visit 1st Grade!!

Last week Dr. Jones, a veternarian and first grade parent came to visit. He brought with him a baby deer that he was caring for. He talked all about what to do if you find a wild animal and how to be safe around wild animals. The highlight of his visit was when we all got to pet the baby. Thanks for coming to visit, Dr. Jones.
